NEWS & EVENTS ARCHIVE BEVERLY HILLS COSMETIC SURGERY

You Think You've Got Weird Ears?

This week, everyone's been talking about the 7-year-old who had cosmetic surgery on her ears to make her less of a target for bullies. But here's an equally strange news story about a woman who got cosmetic surgery that practically begs people to make fun of hers—she had her human ears remade to look like Lord of The Rings-esque elf ears. CBS did a story on the phenomenon (apparently it's not just this one elf-lovin' lady), which is called "ear pointing" and is also done by Trekkies.

But besides being just plain bizarre, the procedure may be dangerous and permanent. "Infections can occur because of the limited blood flow to ears. Plus, it is practically non-reversible, since cuts to ear cartilage are difficult to repair," says Grant Stevens, a plastic surgeon in Marina Del Rey and Beverly Hills, California. "I doubt any board-certified plastic surgeon would be willing to do this procedure," he says. That means most people in search of elf ears are left to seek out the aid of "tattoo artists and body piercers, who are often unlicensed and therefore prohibited from using anesthesia and it hurts," Stevens says. Not to mention it gives away all of your nerdy fantasies before you even open your mouth to speak Elvish.
