In September of 2002 the FDA approved a clinical investigation of Silimed's semi-solid Silicone gel implants for use in breast augmentation, reconstruction and revisions. Dr. Stevens and Dr. Stoker have both been selected to participate in the Silimed Cohesive Gel Implant Study.
The semi-solid gel implants, called Cohesive Gel Implants, feel softer and more natural than saline implants, and unlike saline implants, they will not wrinkle. The cohesive gel implants also differ from saline or standard silicone implants which leak when the implant shell is ruptured. Cutting into a cohesive gel implant is a little like cutting into a "gummy bear".
Silimed is the third largest implant producer in the world and their implants are used in over 50 countries. The cohesive gel implants under study have been used widely in Europe since 1995 and in Canada since 2000. This study is paving the way for their general use in the United States.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of cohesive gel implants?
Cohesive gel breast implants are soft and natural-feeling. Unlike traditional implants, cohesive gel implants maintains its shape and upright position, which decreases the incidence of folding of the implant shell and the development of rippling.
If the shell of a cohesive gel implant ruptures, it maintains both its shape and integrity. And there are nine models of cohesive gel implants in a variety of sizes, providing flexibility for the patient and surgeon in determining the appropriate implant to balance body proportions and breast aesthetics.
How does the FDA study work?
Any candidate for breast implant surgery as a part of breast augmentation, reconstruction and revisions may apply to participate in the study, but only through one of the few surgeons in the country chosen for the study, such as Dr. Stevens and Dr. Stoker.
A total of 1,000 patients will be selected to participate in the study, and all participants must agree to return at periodic intervals and complete some follow-up paperwork. While participants must pay for their surgery and implants, they are paid $50 per visit to keep their follow up appointments, up to $750 over 10 years.
